A closer look at Psalms 23:4
Psalm 23:4 is the centre of a trust psalm whose shepherd has already led the speaker to green pastures and still waters. The valley of the shadow of death is a place of mortal danger, not a euphemism that only applies at a funeral. The change in the psalm is intimate: the speaker stops talking about God (He leadeth me) and speaks directly to God (thou art with me). Presence, rather than an explanation, is the comfort.
The verse therefore does not promise a route around every dark valley. It promises company inside it, and the rod and staff picture protection and guidance while the walk continues. That makes it honest language for grief, illness, fear, and any season where a person cannot see the next turn. Read slowly, the verse gives a simple prayer: I am walking through this; I am not walking alone; guide me one step at a time.
