Verses by Book

The pool spans 55 books of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. Pick a book and read the passages represented in this pool — or let a random Bible verse find you instead.

Why Read a Random Bible Verse or Scripture Passage?

A random Bible verse is not a shortcut around reading Scripture — it is a door back into it. Most of us know the feeling: you want to read the Bible, you open it, and the sheer size of the thing quietly talks you out of it. Sixty-six books. Where do you even start? A single, well-chosen verse lowers the threshold to almost nothing. You read one sentence slowly, let it ask something of you, and more often than not you find yourself wanting the paragraph around it.

That is the whole philosophy behind this site. The generator is not an oracle and it is not trying to be one. It is closer to a friend who knows the book well and says, on a hard morning, "here — sit with this one for a minute." The randomness removes your decision fatigue; the curation makes sure whatever arrives is worth your attention.

Encouragement, not fortune-telling

Let us be honest about what this is not. Some people open the Bible at random hoping for a direct answer — "should I take the job?" — and treat whatever their thumb lands on as a verdict. That practice has a long history and a mixed reputation, and we do not endorse it here. A verse about a famine in Genesis is not a comment on your mortgage application. What a random scripture verse can do is reframe your day: interrupt anxious spirals, give language to gratitude, or simply remind you that people have brought exactly your feelings to God for three thousand years.

And here is our honest limitation, stated plainly: randomness is the doorway, but context is the destination. A single passage of Scripture, separated from its chapter, can be misunderstood — sometimes badly. Every verse on this site therefore ships with two tools: a one-line plain-English note, and a "Read in context" toggle that shows the surrounding verses. If a verse grips you, keep going. Read the whole chapter. That is the outcome we are actually hoping for.

What makes this pool different

A full-Bible randomizer can land on genealogy, ritual law, or a line that begins mid-sentence. This site instead draws from a maintained pool of 305 passages tagged across eight navigation shelves from anxious to seeking strength. Every verse is available in three built-in text sets: the King James Version, World English Bible, and American Standard Version.

Your browser remembers which verses it has already shown within the current eligible set and starts a new cycle after that set is exhausted. The starting verse is seeded from the browser's local calendar date. Drawing, favorites, and image-card rendering run in the browser; page, data, and optionally enabled translation or analytics requests still pass through the services described in the Privacy Policy.

Who is this for? The person who has not opened a Bible in years and wants a gentle way back. The daily reader who wants a slow minute before the noise starts. The friend looking for the right words to send someone who is grieving. Whatever brought you here, the invitation is the same: one verse, read slowly, with room to breathe.

Scripture, Passage, or Verse — What's the Difference?

People arrive here typing random scripture verse, random scripture passage, random Bible text or random biblical verse. Four phrasings, one wish: a sentence worth sitting with, and no decision about where to open. The words are not perfect synonyms, though, and knowing which one you are after tells you which button to press.

Scripture is the collection

Scripture — from the Latin scriptura, "a writing" — names the sacred texts taken as a whole: here, the sixty-six books of the Protestant canon in English translation. Asking for a random scripture is asking to be handed something from that shelf.

Passage and verse are lengths, not kinds, of text

A passage is any stretch of the text you decide to read, from a sentence to a whole chapter. A verse is the numbered subdivision that lets a passage be cited precisely — the "14" in Exodus 14:14. The numbers were added for navigation long after the text was written, which is why a verse so often begins mid-thought.

What this page hands you

One random Bible verse from the curated pool, with its reference, three public-domain translations, a plain-English note, a short prayer and a "Read in context" toggle that opens the verses around it. If what you actually want is a longer portion — a passage rather than a sentence — draw a random Bible chapter instead: same library, much bigger scoop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is picking a random Bible verse a good way to read Scripture?

It is a good doorway, but a poor destination. Christians have opened the Bible at random for centuries (the practice is sometimes called bibliomancy), and honest opinions differ: many pastors caution that a verse pulled from its context can be misread, and they are right. That is why every verse here comes with a plain-English note and a one-tap way to read the surrounding verses. Use your random Bible verse as a prompt — a word for your day — then let it lead you into the whole chapter.

How random is this generator?

Your browser uses a random draw from the current eligible set and remembers the verses already shown on that device. The pool contains 305 verses tagged across 8 mood shelves, ranging from 30 passages (lonely) to 104 (seeking strength); the anxious shelf contains 76. When the eligible set is exhausted, its cycle starts again. Randomness decides the order; the maintained data file decides the pool.

Which Bible translations do you use?

Three public-domain English text sets are built in: the King James Version (KJV), World English Bible (WEB), and American Standard Version (ASV). Where deployment keys enable them, NIV and ESV are fetched on request through configured APIs and shown with publisher notices. The browser can keep a requested licensed verse in session storage; CDN caching can also apply as documented in the Privacy Policy.

Is this random Bible verse generator free?

Yes. There is no account, subscription, or paywall for the current tools. Mood filtering, image cards, read-aloud, and favorites are available in the browser without payment.

Do you store my verses or track what I read?

Seen-verse history, favorites, and translation preferences use browser storage on your device. Page and data requests still pass through the hosting service. Google Analytics loads only when a valid measurement ID is configured; the current Privacy Policy lists these conditional and known data flows.

What is the verse of the day?

A deterministic hash of your browser's local calendar date selects the starting verse. Readers whose devices show the same date receive the same result; different time zones can briefly be on different dates. Use the Daily Verse page for its rolling seven-day list.

Why do I never get the same verse twice?

Because the generator keeps a private list, in your browser, of the verses it has already shown you. A passage only re-enters the draw after you have seen every other verse in the current set. If you switch moods, the no-repeat rule applies within that mood's smaller pool.

Can I share the verses on social media?

Please do — that is what the image-card feature is for. Tap “Image card” on any verse to generate a 1080×1920 Story or 1080×1080 Post graphic in one of three typographic themes, then download the PNG. Need a quick Bible quote for a caption or a card? The copy button gives you the text in one tap, with or without the reference. WEB and ASV are public domain; KJV reuse has a separate UK rights position, so check our Terms for the relevant boundary.

Is this a form of fortune-telling?

No, and we want to be direct about that. This site does not claim that a randomly drawn verse is a private message from God about your decision. Scripture is not a lottery. A random verse is an invitation to slow down and reflect — the meaning comes from reading the passage honestly, in context, not from the mechanism that surfaced it.

Can I suggest a verse to add to the pool?

You can send a verse reference and a short reason through the contact email. A suggestion is feedback, not a promise that the verse will be added or that a reply will be sent.

Can you give me a random Bible verse right now?

Yes — press Draw a random verse and one appears immediately. There is no account or installation. The result includes a note, prayer, and surrounding-verse view. Before the first draw, the page shows the verse selected for the local calendar date reported by your browser.

Do I need to install an app?

No. Drawing, the no-repeat memory, favourites, read-aloud and image cards all run in the browser. On a phone you can add the site to your home screen from the browser menu and it opens like an app, but nothing comes from an app store, nothing needs updating, and no notification will nag you to come back.

Privacy & Sources

No account is required. Favorites, draw history, and translation preference use local storage on your device. Page and data requests still reach the hosting service; analytics and licensed translation requests occur only when their deployment settings are enabled. Details and known limits are in the privacy policy.

Three public-domain text sets are built in. The quote and image tools use these built-in editions; the Terms page records the territorial KJV note and the separate rules for any optionally enabled licensed translation:

  • King James Version (KJV, 1611/1769) Public domain. Text cross-checked against the King James Bible Online reference text.
  • World English Bible (WEB) Public domain, dedicated to the public by its editors. worldenglish.bible
  • American Standard Version (ASV, 1901) Public domain. Digitized text via the getBible public-domain API.
